Internal research projects - year 2014

Project No.: 1288

Project title:

The territorial dimension of farm diversification (Hrabák)

Head of project:

Mgr. Jiří Hrabák

Staff:

Ing. Tomáš Hlavsa, Ph.D., Ing. Jakub Kučera, Ing. Jaroslav Pražan, Ing. Marie Štolbová, CSc.

Objective:

To analyze the territorial differentiation of Czech agriculture and elucidate the prerequisites for farm diversification from the regional perspective.

Methodology, assumptions, sources:

  • Research question: What farm diversification strategies can be observed in different Czech regions?
  • Literature review, theoretical conceptualization:
In this part, we will develop theoretical concept of farm diversification that will be based on the typology of farm diversification (Meert et al. 2005, Hron et al. 2007). Because of the existence of vast scientific literature on this topic (e.g. Maye, Ilbery, Watts 2009; Turner et al. 2006; Hron, Macák, Huml 2009), this part will be the important step to clarify the concepts and to create the conceptual research framework.
  • Analysis of the territorial differentiation of Czech agriculture:
In this part, we will use statistical methods to analyze Czech agriculture on the background of socio-economic and physical-geographic indicators. The analysis will be made on the base of multivariate statistical methods (cluster and factor analysis). As a result, we expect to identify typological regions.
  • Prerequisites for farm diversification from regional perspective:
The significance of farm diversification in regions will be evaluated on the base of findings from the previous step. In this part, we will statistically evaluate the indicator of diversification (FADN data and agricultural census data (CSO)). We will also analyze the allocation of subsidies on farm diversification (RDP 2007–2013 (SAIF)). Based on the available data on diversification, prerequisites for farm diversification in different regions will be evaluated.
  • Pilot research:
This phase of the research will further assess the possibilities of farm diversification in different typological regions by the use of some qualitative research method. We intend to make about 5-10 structured interviews with farmers. This pilot research will also aim to create hypotheses and evidence for an extensive quantitative survey of farm diversification.

Outputs and their use:

  • Paper in scientific journal.
  • Conference presentation.
  • Findings could also be used for settings of the agricultural policy in new programing period.
