Project title:

MEAT - Strategy analysis of the meat processing industry in the Czech Republic (Špička)

Aim of the project:

The main objective of the project is to identify the sources and limits of the potential competitive advantage of the meat processors in the Czech Republic against the main foreign trading partners. Strategy analysis is carried out mainly from the viewpoint of the manufacturing industry with respect to relationships with farmers, retail chains and consumers.

Summary of the project:

Branch CZ-NACE 10.1 Processing of meat and meat products is one of the key branches of the food industry of the Czech Republic. The problem of meat processing and production of meat products in the Czech Republic is low competitiveness of the vertical against to the foreign trade partners. In 2016, the aim of the project was to identify problems in the vertical of meat from the processors’ point of view; to evaluate the distribution of subsidies to meat processors; to evaluate the strategy in pig breeding, shopping behaviour and preferences of consumers of meat and meat products. In 2016, the second year of the project, a list of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats was extended. Weaknesses of the Czech meat industry are low degree of integration and cooperation in the vertical, unequal distribution of RDP subsidies at the detriment of small processors. According to the survey of shopping behaviour, more than half of the consumers prefer domestic origin of meat and meat products. The strength is successful information campaign focused on the quality and country of origin in the group of consumers with higher education and higher incomes. Opportunities present potential of purchase quality, domestic products by households preferring price and disregard the country of origin (ie. single-member households, pensioners, people with lower education). Threats present low integrated and comprehensive system of consulting for farmers and meat processors. For the year 2017 is expected the continuation of the project. The results of the project contribute to improvement of information bases in this important manufacturing industry and to identify recommendation at the level of policy and management of enterprises, which should be realized for strengthen the competitive advantage of meat industry vertical in Czech Republic.
